For over seven decades, an unidentified person paid a yearly tribute to Poe by visiting the tombstone marking his grave in Baltimore, Maryland.
The figure would be dressed in a black outfit with a white scarf and wide-brimmed hat. He would raise a glass of cognac as a toast to the memory of Poe before disappearing into the wee hours of the morning.
Three roses and the remaining bottle of cognac would be left at the grave.
The Toaster was elusive and was rarely photographed or seen.
