The following is a short excerpt from Dragon's Bait, by the acclaimed novelist Vivian Vande Velde.
"The dragon -- Selendrile -- was awake and in human form and crouched beside her, close enough to touch. He was simply there watching her, with that appraising expression that made him look as thought he'd been either trying to read her mind or speculating how she'd taste."
I first read this book when I was 12 years old. It was a birthday gift from my librarian mother. I still have that same, slightly battered copy on my bookshelf!
It has a wonderfully intelligent and sarcastic tone, and makes for a highly refreshing young adult book.
