There is a short mention of a dragon in The Fall of the House of Usher, by Edgar Allan Poe.
That story was published in 1839. The inspiration for the text could have been based on events at Hezekiah Usher House. A couple known as Mr. and Mrs. Usher may also have served as inspiration for the story. The Ushers were fellow actors and friends of Eliza Poe, Edgar Allan Poe's mother.
